The Stages of Firearms Training: A Path, Not a Single Class
One of the most common misconceptions about firearms training is that it begins and ends with learning how to shoot. In reality, responsible firearms education is a process; one that builds skills, judgment, and confidence over time. Every student starts at a different place, and that’s not only expected, it’s also respected.
Here’s how I approach firearms training, from the very first introduction to more advanced movement-based courses.
For many people, the first challenge isn’t learning how to shoot—it’s becoming comfortable around a firearm. That’s why the introductory pistol course is intentionally low-stress and beginner-friendly.
Starting Point: A Non-Stressful Introduction to Pistols
This class uses SIRT training pistols that emit a laser instead of firing live ammunition. Without loud noise or recoil, students can focus on learning rather than reacting. We cover the fundamentals that every responsible gun owner should understand, including pistol anatomy, safe handling, the differences between revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, and an overview of common ammunition types.
This stage is about removing fear, building familiarity, and creating a solid foundation.
Once students are comfortable with the basics, we move into a live-fire Basic Pistol course. This is where classroom concepts are put into practice on the range in a controlled and supportive environment.
Building Skills: Basic Pistol with Live Fire
Students learn to safely load and unload a firearm, manage recoil, improve accuracy, and maintain awareness while shooting. Emphasis is placed on consistency and safety, not speed. This course helps students gain confidence in their ability to operate a firearm responsibly under live-fire conditions.
Not every student feels ready to move from one level to the next on a set timeline—and that’s completely normal. Private lessons are an excellent tool for students who want additional practice, individualized instruction, or reassurance before advancing.
Private Lessons: Bridging the Gap
One-on-one training allows us to focus on specific skills, address questions in depth, and move at a pace that matches the student’s comfort level. Whether it’s reinforcing fundamentals, refining technique, or simply building confidence, private lessons help students prepare for the next stage without pressure.
At some point, many students ask an important question: Am I ready to use a firearm for self-defense? This course exists to help answer that honestly.
The Big Question: Am I Ready for Firearms Self-Defense?
Rather than focusing only on shooting, this class addresses the broader responsibilities of defensive firearm ownership. We discuss legal considerations, ethical responsibility, mindset, and personal limitations. Concealed carry and home defense strategies are also discussed. Students are encouraged to think critically about decision-making, awareness, and the realities of self-defense.
This course isn’t about convincing anyone to carry; it’s about helping them understand what readiness truly means.
Adding Movement: Off the X
Real-world encounters are rarely static. The Off the X course introduces movement into firearms training while maintaining a strong focus on safety and control.
Students learn how movement can create time, distance, and opportunity, rather than standing still and reacting to events. We work on breaking fixation, improving positioning, and integrating movement with accuracy. This course begins to bridge the gap between traditional range training and real-world considerations.
Advancing the Skill Set: Off the X 2
Off the X 2 builds on everything learned previously. This course adds complexity and reinforces problem-solving while moving. Students refine their ability to think, adapt, and respond rather than relying on scripted actions.
The emphasis remains on discipline, awareness, and deliberate decision-making; skills that apply far beyond the range.
Training Is a Journey
There is no finish line in firearms training. Each stage serves a purpose, and each student progresses at their own pace. Whether through group classes or private lessons, the goal is the same: responsible, informed, and capable firearm ownership.
