Thoughts on the recent Mass Shooting at an IN-n-Out Burger in Idaho.
The recent mass shooting at an In-N-Out Burger in, Idaho,
where three people were killed and several others were injured, is a reminder
that violent incidents can occur in everyday places. The attack happened
quickly in one of the busy hours of the day, lunch. Two individuals,
an off-duty officer and an armed civilian’s actions helped limit further loss
of life. This, and other similar events
underscores the importance of preparedness.
Situational Awareness: Staying Safe in Public Places
It is very important that we practice situational awareness:
How to stay safe in public places. It is
sad that we have to say this, however, recent events remind us that emergencies
as well as violent incidents can happen anywhere- even in places we visit every
day. While these incidents are rare, having a plan
and maintaining awareness can significantly improve your chances of staying
safe.
1. Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings
- Avoid distractions
and stop becoming completely absorbed in your phone.
- Notice
entrances, exits, and emergency exit doors whenever you enter a building.
- Pay
attention to unusual behavior, arguments, or someone acting aggressively
or erratically.
2. Know Your Escape Routes
Whenever you enter a restaurant, store, theater, or other
public venue:
- Identify
at least two exits.
- Think
about how you would leave if the main entrance became inaccessible.
- Keep
children and family members close enough that you can move together
quickly.
Never sit facing backwards from the traffic flow. You would always want to have eyes that can scan/see what is going on.
3. Trust Your Instincts
If something feels wrong:
- Leave
immediately.
- Don't
worry about appearing rude or overreacting.
- Distance
is often your greatest protection.
4. If Violence Occurs
Recommendations:
- Run
if you have a safe escape route.
- Hide
if escape isn't possible. Silence your phone, lock or barricade doors if
possible, and stay out of sight.
- Fight
ONLY as the last resort when your life is in immediate danger and there is
no safe way to escape.
5. Communicate
- Call
911 as soon as it is possible and safe to do so.
- Provide
your location, a description of the threat, and if you see injured people.
6. After the Incident
- Keep
your hands visible when police arrive.
- Follow
their commands.
- Check
yourself and your loved ones for injuries.
- Reach
out for emotional support if you witnessed or experienced the event.
Everyday Preparedness
Preparedness isn't about living in fear; it's about
developing habits that improve safety:
- Maintain
awareness without being anxious.
- Have a
family emergency plan in place.
- Learn
basic first aid and stop the bleed techniques.
- Practice
remaining calm under stress.
Remember, the goal is not to expect danger
everywhere, but to be mentally prepared to recognize problems early, take/make
good decisions, and act quickly if case of an emergency.
We are praying for those affected by this tragedy. Incidents
like this one reinforce the value of awareness, preparation, and looking out
for one another.
Stay Safe-Stay Blessed!
